Some common misconceptions that teachers have about differentiated instruction are that differentiation won't match the standards, it is only for special education or gifted students, and that it is an extra teaching method that should be used when everything else has been covered. This couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, the standards are only the curriculum, the way we teach is considered differentiation and it has to make sense to all students. Differentiation is also about every single kid in a classroom and we do now realize that all students are different and the phrase "normal" is indeed a thing of the past. Every child is at a different readiness level and as educators it is our job to help all students get to the place where we need them to be. If each students works at the appropriate level of challenge we should be experiencing constant growth where students are not being over challenged or being bored to tears because the pace is too slow. Differentiated instruction should be at the core of effective planning and should be a proactive tool rather than the proactive way that it has been utilized for far too long. Like they said in the video, a good waiter will bring ketchup with a burger and fries so the option is there instead of waiting for someone to have to ask for them. We should have these kinds of situations for our students in a successful classroom.
